Few bureaucrats in Maharashtra enjoy the kind of public recognition that IAS officer Tukaram Mundhe does. Over the years, his uncompromising approach to administration and reputation for taking tough decisions have earned him the popular moniker of “Singham IAS” among supporters.
Born in Beed district, Mundhe pursued higher education at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University, where he completed his graduation in History before obtaining a postgraduate degree in Political Science.
His journey into the civil services began in 2004 when he secured an All India Rank of 20 in the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examination. He joined the Indian Administrative Service the following year as part of the 2005 Maharashtra cadre.
During his administrative career spanning more than two decades, Mundhe has held a number of key assignments across the state. His postings have included districts and cities such as Nanded, Washim, Jalna, Solapur, Navi Mumbai, Nashik, Nagpur and Pune, where he served in various capacities ranging from Assistant Collector and District Collector to Municipal Commissioner and head of public transport undertakings.
One of the defining phases of his career came during his tenure as Solapur Collector, where his initiatives in water conservation and resource management received widespread appreciation. His efforts in improving water availability and introducing administrative reforms earned him the Maharashtra Government’s Best District Collector Award for 2015-16. His contribution to water management also led to him being widely referred to as the “Waterman of Maharashtra”.
Career Defined by Frequent Transfers
Mundhe’s administrative journey has also been marked by an unusually high number of transfers. Reports suggest that he has been transferred around 25 times during his 21-year career in the civil services.
Supporters often attribute these repeated transfers to his insistence on strict implementation of rules and his unwillingness to compromise under political or administrative pressure. Critics, however, have argued that his hardline style of functioning has occasionally resulted in friction within government departments and administrative circles.
Despite the challenges posed by frequent changes in postings, Mundhe has continued to cultivate an image of a no-nonsense administrator known for enforcing regulations, promoting transparency and acting swiftly against irregularities irrespective of the individuals or interests involved.
His latest assignment as Commissioner of the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration has once again brought him into the public spotlight as he leads the state’s campaign against food adulteration and synthetic milk networks under the “Safe Food, Safe Maharashtra” initiative.
