Government hostels for backward class students under the Department of Social Justice and Special Assistance are run as part of government residential schooling initiatives. These aim to promote educational, social, and economic progress and improve their standard of living so that students can live on par with other sections of society. The Government Hostel Scheme has been launched with the objective of providing access to education and higher education opportunities. Under this scheme, students admitted to government hostels are provided free accommodation and meals. Stationery such as books, notebooks, and other educational materials are also supplied.
Under the Social Justice Department and Social Welfare, a total of 25 government hostels—including 14 hostels for backward class boys and girls in urban areas and 11 hostels at the taluka level—are operational in Nagpur district under the Nagpur office. The following guidelines are being issued regarding admission to these hostels.
The free admission process for government hostels for the academic year 2026–27 has begun. For online applications, the portal https://hmas.mahait.org should be used. Hostel admissions for school students will begin from June 30. Online applications for Class XI and XII as well as non-vocational courses can be submitted from July 15. For more information, applicants may contact the concerned government hostel superintendent or the Assistant Commissioner, Social Welfare, Nagpur office.
