One of the classical dance forms of India, Mohiniyattam always enthralls the audience with its magic. In Nagpur, there are few people who are well versed in this art form and Malini Menon is one of the doyens of this classical form in city. She with her disciple, Laxmi Menon performed a Mohiniyattam Margam,’Reaching out’ at Bhavan’s Bhagwandas Purohit Auditorium on Friday.
She depicted the concept of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,also she inculcated two Marathi dances in the Margam. The recital was started with an ode to ’Pratham pujya’ lord Ganesha with a Ganesh Vandana based on raga Yaman. She later performed Deepamalika in raga Yaman and Talamalika recited by Anand Fadnavis.
Laxmi Menon, the disciple of her performed the Mohiniyattam a varnam. Another performance was based on Omana Tingal in Ragamalika. The intricate foot movements of Malini Menon were in true sense a laudable and the audience was fascinated by the entire repertoire.
An exponent of Mohiniyattam, Malini Menon has founded the Nrityamalika school of Mohiniyattam in Nagpur.
