A recent study has revealed shocking information that total of 18 tigers were poached in Maharashtra in last 31 months and all the cases are from Vidarbha.
City based RTI activist, Abhay Kolarkar had filed an RTI query which has disclosed the shocking facts. Kolarkar did a study on the basis of information he received from the office of Principal Chief Conservator of Forest. He asked the number of the deaths of the big cats due to poaching and also enquired about the action taken against the culprits.
According to the information provided by the office, 18 big cats including 10 male tigers, 6 tigresses and two tiger cubs were poached during January 1, 2017, to July 31, 2019. Nine of these tigers were poached in year 2017, three in year 2018, and six in the year 2019.
Poaching cases are highest in Nagpur, Chandrapur ranges. Eight cases of poaching were registered from each range in 31 months. One case in Gadchiroli and one from Amravati was also registered.
