With all the difficulties faced by the two new garbage collection agencies, BVG and AG Enviro assigned by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), they have started their garbage collection process from Monday, November 18. The work process by these two agencies should have been already started from November 16, but due to the oppose faced by the employees of Kanak, which was the agency previously assigned for the similar duty, BVG and AG Enviro had no option but to cancel the whole day routine planned to clean the city.
Because of the delay in work 1,995 tonne of garbage had not been lifted since last two days. The workers of Kanak had opposed the agencies for not providing employment as promised by the newly assigned agencies. It was settled to 700 employees who had actually got the job and rest 800 were sitting idle without any employment letter given in hand to them.
According to senior NMC official, The new agencies have more motor vehicles to collect garbage instead of hand drawn vehicles or trolleys, hence they are in a need of more drivers than workers. Whereas Kanak, it had more workers than the drivers. Also in a vehicle only one driver and one worker can be adjusted comfortably.
The Live Nagpur also discussed the issue with a well-known Environmentalist of City Kaustav Chatterjee, who explained; “Lifting 1250 MT of solid waste every day is a huge task. Kanak has been doing it since last 10 years, new agencies will take atleast 15 days to streamline the operation. These are the initial hiccups which every city faces whenever there is a change in agency.
Number of vehicles being deployed by A G Enviro as well as BVG together is more than double as compared to the one that were on field so far, hence end result is bound to be good. The advantage is new agencies have taken 90% of existing employees of Kanak Resources, who were already on-field and knows every route of the city, he added.
 He appealed to the citizens to have patience and support NMC, for a smooth changeover.
