An age old cult, space opera film franchise dedicatedly followed by the Millennial (Gen Y), “Star Wars†best known for its action filled with outer space drama and characters, has a day celebrated in many parts of the world.
The origin of this day, Apocryphally, began when Margaret Thatcher (a.k.a Iron Lady), took her position as prime minister of United Kingdom in 1979 and her political party called the Conservatives published an advertisement in London Evening news saying, May the fourth be with you, which is a pun referring to a known tag line in the Star wars franchise “May the Force be with youâ€.
The similar catchphrase was used in “The science of star wars†a book released in 1999 by Jeanne Cavelos (American Sci-Fi writer and former NASA astrophysicist).
Although, the date has no connection to the movie release, it’s just a commemorating ceremony for George Lucas the writer of Star Wars and director of Star wars episode IV- A new hope, which was released in 1977.
There is another celebration held amongst the Star wars fan on May 5th or sometimes 6th as “Revenge of the Fifth or Sixth†highlighting a play on Star wars: Episode III, Revenge of the Sith. Sith here, is a major villainous character in this space opera.
Dev Thackrey, a diehard fan of Star wars series since his school time has been recently having a good time watching and completing series over again in this lockdown period.
“Days after having a busy schedule I finally got a chance to sit and complete the star wars series again. The lockdown has had its drawbacks but for me it’s a chance to revise my movie experience.†Said Thackrey, while talking to TLN.
Further he also mentioned watching “Star Wars the Clone Wars†which was an animated series of the same franchise, although from a different production house which got him into following the whole movie series.
Since The Walt Disney Company has had its hold over Lucas film, the original production house of Star Wars, in 2012 Disney got all the rights to the film franchise and started several festivals and events on May 4 celebrating Star Wars day.
Recently Disney+ has also got a series in the film franchise, The Mandalorian, which depicts the prequel to a major character from the early storyline.
If you are into Sci-Fi, this is the proper period to refer your memories while growing up, overall again. Go through your own order of Star wars movies or go through the chronological order which explains a proper build-up of characters from the series, but if you are a diehard fan and a movie cult enthusiast you might want to go through the release order. All in all “May the Fourth be with youâ€.
