The sixth International Yoga Day is being observed across the world. “Yoga unites, spreads brotherhood,†Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who played an instrumental role in popularizing yoga in the world after coming to power in 2014, said in his message today. Since 2015, International Yoga Day is a United Nations designated day.
As the world is affected by the ongoing pandemic the theme of International Yoga Day is “Yoga for Health – Yoga at Homeâ€.
While the social distancing measures adopted by countries to fight the COVID-19 pandemic have shut down yoga studios and other communal spaces, yoga practitioners have turned to home practice and online yoga resources. Yoga is a powerful tool to deal with the stress of uncertainty and isolation, as well as to maintain physical well-being.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation on the International Yoga Day where he said that the world has now resorted to virtual yoga due to COVID-19. “All of us are doing yoga at home with the family. Yoga unifies people, unifies the world. Yoga is helping us in this fight against this pandemic. The pranayamas help us in building immunity and resolving respiratory illnesses.†“If we can fine-tune our chords of health and hope, the day is not far away when the world will witness the success of healthy and happy humanity. Yoga can definitely help us make this happen Yoga enhances our quest for a healthier planet†he said.
“The deadly Coronavirus attack our respiratory system and in order to make our respiratory system strong we must do breathing exercise†he suggested.
The United Nations General Assembly recognised June 21 as International Yoga Day in 2014. People acknowledge the physical and spiritual benefits of Yoga and observe this day across countries since June 2015.
