The Union Cabinet on Wednesday has changed the name of the ‘Ministry of Human Resource Development’ (HRD) to the ‘Ministry of Education’. The change in the name of the ministry was approved during a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The HRD Ministry is currently headed by former Uttarakhand chief minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank.
The Cabinet has also approved a new National Education Policy and the formal announcement in this regard will be made during a press conference in the evening.
The ministry has been renamed as per the recommendations of the draft NEP 2020. The draft policy stated that in order to bring the focus back on education and learning, the Ministry of Human Resource Development should be re-designated as the Ministry of Education (MoE).
