The Indian Nursing Council is all to close the General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) course approved by the Maharashtra Nursing Council and Paramedical Board soon. The ongoing crisis raised the demand of doctors and medical staff to handle the pandemic smoothly. But this decision will hit the health system in Maharashtra very hard. Nursing sector is the most important medium of women empowerment and mainly among girls from rural areas. The girls from rural areas can easily get a job from Rs 12,000 to Rs 15,000 after completing GNM course. Arts, Commerce students can also earn a living by doing this course. There are 170 GNM colleges in the State. However, the Indian Nursing Council has decided to discontinue the GNM course and implement the BScNursing course across the country. After this decision, the students of Arts and Commerce who want to enter the field of Nursing will be restricted. If the students get admission in BSc Nursing, the dropout rate will increase. All hospitals in Maharashtra are facing shortage of medical staff amid this COVID-19 situation.Insteadof recruiting more nurses in hospitals; the Indian Nursing Council is planning to reduce the workforce, which will create a huge demand for nurses in future.
