All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has directed technical institutions in the country not to reject admissions to direct second year degree course to the students completing Diploma and who are eligible as per the norms. The students, after completing Diploma Engineering, become eligible to get lateral entry to degree engineering. It means, they get admission directly to Second Year degree engineering courses provided they score as per the norms prescribed by the apex body. But some institutions in the country are not giving admissions to Diploma Engineering students to degree courses, which have been noticed by AICTE. AICTE in its circular issued recently said, “The institutions are refusing the admissions but as per AICTE Approval Process Handbook for academic year 2020-21, there is no such restrictions in the admission of Diploma students to Under Graduate (UG) engineering and technology courses under lateral entry. The Apex body has elaborated the eligibility of students who can get admission to direct second year UG course. The students must have completed 3 years Diploma engineering course with at least 45% marks (40% marks in case of candidates belonging to reserved category) in any branch of engineering and technology.
The candidate who has done B.Sc from a recognised university as defined by University Grants Commission with at least 45% marks (40% marks in case of candidates belonging to reserved category and passed 10+2 examination with Mathematics as a subject. Provided that the students belonging to B.Sc stream shall clear the subjects engineering graphics, engineering, drawing and engineering mechanics of the first year engineering programme along with the second year subjects. Provided that the students belonging to B.Sc stream shall be considered only after filing the super numeracy in this category with students belonging to the diploma stream. Students who have passed D.Voc stream in the same or allied sector. The AICTE circular further cleared, passed Diploma in engineering and technology examination with at least 45% marks (40% marks in case of candidates belonging to reserved category) subject to vacancies in the first year, in case the vacancies at lateral entry are exhausted. Therefore AICTE has asked all the State Government/Universities to inform all the institutions falling under their jurisdiction to adhere to the condition for the admission of diploma qualified students in UG courses as per the Approval Handbook for later entry admission.
