The civic administration has commenced the sterilization drive to check the number of stray dogs. Despite this, the number of stray dogs has increased in the last six months as the drive was ceased due to Covid pandemic. As per information, the sterilization of stray dogs had started in February 2019 but the number of sterilization was limited.
To accelerate the process, the contract of sterilization was given to an organization, but after the Covid-19 pandemic has started in March the sterilization drive got slows in April and in April it was completely stopped. Now the civic authority is considering to accelerate the sterilization drive. As per information, about Rs.30 lakh has been spent in the last two years for the sterilization of stray dogs. About 4500 stray dogs were castrated. Earlier; Rs.700 was spent for one sterilization. Now it costs Rs.1000.There are about 85000 stray dogs in Nagpur city. For the last few years, the survey of stray dogs was not conducted. Meanwhile; the number of stray dogs has increased significantly. And NMC is getting complaints everyday regarding the stray dogs and the administration is planning to find a solution for this menace.
