Nagpur Municipal Corporation has collaborated with National Service Scheme unit of Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University for maintenance of statues in the city. The volunteers of 151 colleges in the city, affiliated to the University will look after the statues.
The statues which have been built to inspire people, remain neglected throughout the year. They are cleaned only on birth and death anniversary of the historical heroes.
City Mayor Dayashankar Tiwari took initiative to involve NSS volunteers in maintenance of these statues.
The NSS volunteers have already contributed in serving the society during the first wave of Covid19. The volunteers supplied food to the needy and also distributed masks. The masks were made by prisoners of Nagpur Central Jail.
Although the colleges have not been allowed to open, the proposal has been moved by the Mayor and RTMNU authorities. The Government is likely to allow colleges to function on a regular basis, within a short period.
NSS volunteers have also worked to generate awareness about the dreaded virus and importance of vaccination. They will now work on maintenance of the statues in the city, informs a press note issued by NMC.
