There has always been a talk to provide voter identity cards to new voters by speed post. Now it will be a reality as the voter identity card of the new voters will be sent to them by speed post only, informed the chief electoral officer of the state Shrikant Deshpande.
Deshpande who is currently on Vidarbha visit took stock of the situation in the Amravati and Nagpur division on Friday.
“A large number of youths are out of the election process as they have not registered as voters yet. A special public awareness programme will be organised Election by the Commission from November 1 to 30 encourage such youths to register in the voters list†Deshpande said.
A special camp will be organised on November 13 and 14 as well as on November 27 and 28 for registering voters from the deprived sections and divyangs.
Similarly, special gram sabhas would be held on November 16, he added. This includes registration of young voters in the village as well as registration of newly-wed people coming to village.
If someone gets married and leaves the village, his or her name would be cut from the list, he added.
Over 5 lakh people had registered themselves in the voting list at minimum two places. Such people were traced during the voter list update programme. The number of such people is now only 13,000. Deshpande said that the work to reduce this number further is still going on.
