Maharashtra has recorded eight new Omicron cases on Tuesday, taking the total numbers in the State to 28. The State continues to record the highest number of cases in the country.
of the eight new cases, seven have been recorded in Mumbai and one from Vasai Virar. With this, the total number of Omicron cases in Mumbai has risen to 12.
According to the State health department, as per preliminary information, none of the eight have a history of international travel. A health department official said,” As per the information we gathered, none of them have recently travelled abroad. Some of them have travelled within the country, to Delhi and Bangalore.”
While most other cases in the last few days in the State had people travelling from ‘at risk’ or ‘low risk’ countries, this is the first time in the State that as many as eight have no international travel history.
Out of the eight new cases which fall in the age group of 24 and 41, three are asymptomatic and five have mild symptoms. Health officials have been continuing to maintain that none of the patients so far have shown any serious symptoms.
As per the State health department, only one among the eight has not been vaccinated. So far 9 out of 28 Omicron patients have been discharged after testing negative. A total of 13,615 people have arrived from ‘at risk’ countries to the State since December 1, of which 30 have tested positive whose genome sequencing results are awaited.
The spike in the number of cases also comes at a time when the State government has directed schools to commence for class 1 to class 7 from Wednesday. However, most schools in Mumbai have decided to not commence school for classes 1-7 as they have not received consent from parents and the schools refusing to take the risk of re-opening due of the increasing cases of Omicron.
