Garbage on open plots is a health threat for neighbouring people, hence the Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s (NMC) nuisance detection squad (NDS) is issuing notices to plot owners. It has sent notices to 138 plot owners so far.
In the general body of NMC, it was announced that if waste was discovered lying on an open plot, the owner would be prosecuted. The NMC has established rules that will result in sanctions for such owners.
During the rainy season, waste dumps on open plots become mosquito breeding grounds. This causes a great deal of inconvenience to the adjacent people. NMC receives a large number of complaints in this area.
Assistant commissioner of the tax assessment department, Milind Meshram, had directed all zonal assistant commissioners to locate such lands. His instructions, however, were not being followed. Finally, something is being done about it.
NDS chief Veersen Tambe, said that the squad NDS, acting on information given by the ten zones, had recovered a fine of Rs 1.35 lakh.
“If the plot owner does not clean up his or her plot then NMC staffers do it. The civic body imposes a fine of Rs 50 per square meter on such owners,” he added.
