The Enforcement Directorate has opposed bail for Maharashtra former Home Minister Anil Deshmukh and Minister for Minorities Nawab Malik. Both have applied for bail for voting in Legislative Council polling. Both Deshmukh and Malik are in jail in money laundering cases.
Deshmukh and Malik were refused one-day bail for Rajya Sabha elections, held on June 9. The Legislative Council voting is scheduled for June 20.
Both have appealed to the Bombay High Court, with a demand that they may be allowed to exercise the franchise in police bandobast. The ED has stated that those in jail have no right to vote.
Nationalist Congress party, thus, is deprived of two votes. Deshmukh is facing money laundering charges leveled by former police officers Sachin Waze and Param Bir Singh. Malik is charged with money laundering and terror funding through links to fugitive Dawood Ibrahim.
