Earthquake of 5.4 magnitude struck Bengkulu province of Indonesia on Tuesday. The US Geological Survey, which recorded the magnitude of the quake, stated that the epicentre is 57.17 kms deep. No warning of tsunami has been issued. Loss of life or property has not been reported so far.

More than 1300 people were killed in earthquake in Sumatra on March 28, 2005. This was fourth powerful earthquake after 1965 and 11th most powerful in the world. The magnitude of the quake was recorded at 8.6. A few months earlier 9.1 magnitude quake in Sumatra on December 26, 2004 led to tsunami, which killed more than 2.50 lakh people in Indonesia, India and Sri Lanka. More than 1.65 lakh people died in Indonesia alone.
