The Centennial year celebrations of Rashtrsant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University will be inaugurated on Thursday at a function to be held at Kavivarya Suresh Bhat Sabhagruha, Reshimbag at 10.30 am.
The Chancellor and Governor Bhagatsingh Kosyari will preside over the function. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari will be the chief guest. Renowned scientist and Chancellor of Homi Bhabha National Institute Dr Anil Kakodkar will be the guest of honour. RTMNU Vice-Chancellor Dr Subhash Chaudhari, Pro-VC Dr Sanjay Dudhe will remain present on the dais.
The university has a golden history of producing luminaries in various fields including law and judiciary, politics, medicine, scientists, literature. Prominent among them include former Vice-president Justice Hidayatullah, former Chief Justice of India Sharad Bobde, former Supreme Court Judge Vikas Sirpurkar, sitting SC judge Bhushan Gavai and his father former Governor R S Gavai; Supreme Court Lawyer Harish Salve and his father ex-Minister NKP Salve, former Prime Minister P V Narsimha Rao, A B Bardhan, political leaders like Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, Vilas Muttemwar, Vasant Purke, Vasant Sathe, Vasantrao Naik, Sudhakar Naik, renowned personalities in arts D G Godse, Ashok Kumar and Kishor Kumar, litterateur poets Suresh Bhat, Grace (Manik Godghate), A R Deshpande (Kavi Anil), academicians Dr Shrikant Jichkar, Dr P L Bhandarkar, ex-NEERI Director Dr Satish Wate, Neeri Deputy Director Hemant Purohit etc.
The University admitted Narsimha Rao and others, when they were rusticated from Hyderabad for reciting Vande Mataram. The University awarded Honorary D Litt to Swatantraveer Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, former PM Indira Gandhi, Buddhist religious Guru Dalai Lama.
The university’s new administrative building has been illuminated to mark the occasion.
Various programmes have been planned to mark the centenary year, which includes the hosting of Indian Science Congress in January 2023.
