Heavy rains in Madhya Pradesh since August 15 have adversely affected drinking water supply to Ashi Nagar, Satranjipura, Nehru Nagar and Lakadganj zones from North, East and parts of South Nagpur (45 per cent) areas of the city getting water supply fromn Kanhan Water Treatment Plant feeder main fed ESR’s on Tuesday.
Following heavy rains in MP, all the 16 gates of Navegaon-Khairy dam to their full capacity. It is learnt that due to sudden release of huge amount of water from Totladoh dam to Khairy dam and then further release the gates of Khairy dam would remain open atleast for 48 hours. This has resulted in the flood like situation in downstream areas of Kanhan river, the level of which has gone up to 276 mtr and chocking of NMC-OWC Kanhan WTP intake wells.
The dry wells have been submerged in flood water and at Jackwell the high water current is posing extreme challenge for the scuba divers to dive down 10 mtr deep into river water for cleaning strainers. Due to this, pumping from Kanhan was stopped in the early morning today. Later, there has only been partial pumping in small slots.
As per the feedback from Water Resources Department (WRD), it is expected that the water level in Kanhan river would decrease by late night on Tuesday.
