As the lease owners were hesitating to vacate the property, Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) on Thursday took possession of 28 shops under the station road flyover. The squad had to break the locks to conduct the demolishing process.
The civic organisation has begun the process of tearing down the flyover built in front of Nagpur Railway Station. The complex built on the former MSRTC land on station road has been offered as an alternative residence to the leaseholders.
While some of the lease owners have shifted to new premises, some shopkeepers are still staying put even though NMC has offered them 8 per cent interest on their deposit. Of the 57 shopkeepers, 15 have approached High Court seeking enhanced compensation and till then, sought status quo.
The remaining 42 lease holders of shops and from them, 14had not vacated the premises despite being served notice.
Today, NMC authorities directed anti-encroachment squad to take over the possession. A six lane road is proposed to be constructed from funds provided by Central Road Fund (CRF) to decongest the central part of city.
