The prices of vegetables both wholesale and retail have fallen substantially due to increased supply from the farmers. Sources say that the prices are likely to remain low and stable till March.
On average, the wholesale market price range for the majority vegetables is of Rs 20/- to Rs 25/- per kg and in retail, it is Rs 30/- to Rs 40/- per kg.
Another reason for the fall in price is the improvement in the quality of vegetables which always happens in winter. This happens as the weather is dry and soil moisture is good after the monsoon.
The prices during summer and monsoon are high due to short supply. In summer there is no or little water to grow vegetables which require a lot of water for cultivation and so the supply is short. In monsoon, local farmers generally don’t grow vegetables which increases the prices due to short supply.
