Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has unfortunately failed to set aside the amount of Rs 304 crore for the New Nag River Plan and Rs 10 crore per annum as operation and management costs in the last 12 years.
New tax implementation will be introduced in the name of sanitation charges or hiking property tax, as directed by the finance committee, union ministry of finance last year.
The project worth Rs 1,927 crore was approved just a couple of days ago by the Union Cabinet out of which the Central Government was supposed to contribute Rs 1,115.2 crore ( 60%) and the State Government was supposed to contribute Rs 507.36 crore (25%) and the remaining Rs 304.41 crore (15%) was to contribute by the NMC.
The project was proposed in the year 2010 by Civic Body, following the directions of the Nagpur bench of the Bombay High Court. Not a single penny was saved by the civic body for the project.
Some former NMC corporators and officials are however opposing the stand of NMC to increase taxes and burden the citizens.
NMC took over seven long years for approval for the Nag River Pollution Abatement Project. NMC is yet to finalize the detailed project report (DPR) of the Nag River Beautification Project which was actually supposed to be executed after the pollution abatement project.
