RTMNU to host ISC for second occasion
Nagpur is hosting the 108th Indian Science Congress from January 3 to 7, 2023. This is the fifth Indian Science Congress being hosted by Nagpur city and second by Rashtrasant Tukadoji Mahraj Nagpur University.
The city hosted the seventh Indian Science Congress in 1020, when Prafulla Chandra Roy was the President of Indian Science Congress Association (ISCA). The theme then was ‘Dawn of Sience in modern India’. In 1931 wyhen R B Seymour Sewell was the president of ISCA the second Indian Science Congress was held in Nagpur with the theme ‘The problem of evolution experimental modification of bodily structure’. This was the 18th Science Congress. The next opportunity to the city was awarded in 1945 when the 32nd Science Congress was held on the theme ‘Give Science a Chance’. Prof Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar was the president of the ISCA.
After a long gap the host of Indian Science Congress was the Nagpur University in 1974. The then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi inaugurated the ISC at the university’s sports ground. Prof R S Mishra was the president of ISCA and Dr P S Mene was the Vice-Chancellor of the University and eminent physician Prof Chintamani Mande was the Coordinator. This was the 61st ISC held with the theme ‘Mathematics – Queen of Handmaiden’.
RTM Nagpur University gets the second opportunity to host the ISC in 2023, which is 108th ISC and being held on the theme ‘Science and Technology for sustainable Development with Women Empowerment’. This being the centennial year of the university the ISC was awarded to it.
Traditionally the Indian Science Congress is inaugurated by the Prime Minister. Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Indian Science Congress at 10 am on January 3. Maharashtra Governor and Chancellor of the University Bhagat Singh Koshyari , Union Miinister and Chairman of Advisory Committee of the RTMNU Centenary Year Celebrations Nitin Gadkari; Union Minister of State for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences Dr Jitendra Singh; Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde; Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis will be the guests of honour.
RTMNU has made adequate arrangements for the mega event in its Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Post-graduate Teaching Department premises, on Amravati Road, here. The huge premises has several pandals besides 42 Departments to conduct parallel technical sessions.
RTMNU Vice-Chancellor Dr Subhash Chaudhari along with other officers held discussion with senior journalists in connection with the Indian Science Congress and the University’s Centenary Year celebrations.
The Centenary year will be celebrated in 20023 and 20024. Besides the Science Congress various other seminars, symposium and other events will be held till August 2024.
Dr Chaudhari informed the media that the ISC has been divided in to 14 sections. Besides the technical deliberations otjher major events include Children’s Science Congress, Women’s Science Congress, Science and Society, Farnmers’ Science Congress, Tribal Science Congress and Science Exhibitions.
Two Nobel Laureates Ada Yonath from Israel and Sir Fraser Stoddart, a British Chemist have confirmed their presence for the Indian Science Congress. Several other scientists from various parts of the world will participate in the ISC. In all 2758 research papers will be presented during the five-day event.
A special postal stamp to mark the Indian Science Congress and the centenary year of the University will also be released.
