Renowned diabetologist from Nagpur Dr Sharad Pendse and Minushri Mahendrakumar Rawat of Nagpur’s Garaj Multipurpose Welfare Society have been selected for Ranjana Bhalchandra Mardikar and Bhalchandra Prabhakar Mardikar memorial awards. The awards are given by the Mardikar family and Yuva Zep Trust, on April 24 every year. The award consists of Cash, a Scroll of Honour and books, informs Arvind Mardikar and Sandip Joshi of Yuva Zep Trust.
The award is given to persons who serve society without publicity. Besides the awards every year donation in the form of ‘Gurudakshina’ is given to Dr Hedgewar Smarak Samiti.
Dr Sharad Pendse is serving the people for the last three decades. He inherited service porientation from his father P N Pendse, one of the founder of Swami Vivekanand Hospital, Nagpur. Dr Sharad Pendse is the first diabetologist, who studied diabetology in Germany. He took special interest in juvenile diabetes, particularly the girl child. As juvenile diabetes was a neglected field and was unaffordable by many families, he formed Dream Trust and supplied free insulin to diabetic children below 18 years of age. He trained a special team of workers and is serving more than 2,000 children.
Minushri Rawat is a social work degree holder from Vivekanand College of Social Work, Nagpur. With an inclination towards social work since childhood, Minushri preferred education in the same field. Through the ‘Garaj’ (Need) activities in women and child welfare, health awareness, sanitation and education, skill development, rehabilitation, and tree plantation. Minushri has organized 45 blood donation camps, eye check-up and cataract camps, breast cancer screening camps, distribution of e-shram cards, distribution of educational material,, distribution of wheelchairs and walkers etc. Extending help to needy patients, free medicines, counseling and supplying snaks and tea to Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s shelter home etc has been done with dedication.
