Various trees in the municipal area are going to be counted through the Garden Department of Nagpur Municipal Corporation. Today this campaign is started by Nagpur Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Radhakrishnan B. Tree census in the city is done under the Maharashtra (Urban) Arboriculture Act.
Radhakrishnan B said that trees are very important to maintain the balance of the environment and tree conservation is necessary for the development of the city’s environment. For this, it is necessary to count the trees in the city. The first tree census was done by Municipal Corporation in the year 2011, according to which the number of trees in Nagpur city is 21,43,838.
At present, the number of trees in Nagpur is estimated to be more than 25 lakhs. Nagpur city is extended in an area of 222 sq. km, as per the new ward structure of Nagpur city and including the villages Hudakeshwar and Narsala.
State-of-the-art technology will be used for tree counting. Tree census will be done using GIS and GPS methods. Apart from this, information and the number of heritage trees, approximate age, and photographs will be made available in the public domain. This will benefit common citizens along with environmental studies, students, and professionals. It will take about 11 months for this. Commissioner appealed to the citizens to cooperate in this work.
