The Bombay High Court has directed not to change the name of Aurangabad till further orders. The District Collector of Aurangabad Astikkumar Pandey has issued orders to retain the name of the city as Aurangabad.
Following approval by the Government of India the process of changing the name from Aurangabad to Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar was undertaken by the government departments. The Maha-Vikas Aghadi government in Maharashtra had proposed changes in the names of Aurangabad and Osmanabad as Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar and Dharashiv respectively. MVA’s successor Shinde-Fadnavis government approved the changes, which was later approved by the Centre.
Meanwhile, some residents of Aurangabad opposed the move and MP Imtiaz Jalil moved the court against the changing name of Aurangabad. The High Court issued an order to retain the name Aurangabad till the disposal of the petition. District Collector issued orders to strictly follow the court orders.
