The court has issued notices to the Home Department, Sitabuldi ACP and the Central Jail Superintendent, ordering them to file a reply in this matter.
Nagpur Police had arrested Jayesh Pujari for demanding extortion of 100 crores from Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and threatening to kill him. The accused is currently lodged in Nagpur Center Jail.
Jayesh Pujari, through his advocate Nitesh Samudre, filed a petition in the High Court to transfer himself from Nagpur Central Jail to Belgaum Jail, which High Court Judge GA Sanap heard.
Advocate Samudre, Pujari’s lawyer, said that Nagpur police had registered two cases against him in which he was presented before the court and taken into custody. Now that two cases have been registered against him in Karnataka, also in which statements of witnesses are to be recorded for trial. A letter was sent by the Chief Superintendent of Belagavi Jail on 27 March 2023 requesting to send back the petitioner. He is currently serving a life sentence in a murder case ordered by a court in Karnataka. In addition, his entire family also lives in Karnataka. For this reason, the accused should be kept in the jail of the same jurisdiction where the trial of the case is going on. After hearing the arguments of both sides, the court issued this order to the concerned departments.
