Gondia has reported an interesting case of theft. This time the thieves stole tomatoes, the prices of which are skyrocketing.
The prices of vegetables have soared in the second half of June. The rain god delayed his arrival in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra. Even otherwise the prices of vegetables go high during the onset of monsoon, as the vegetables are sown during this period. The new crop would be ready for harvesting after about two months.
Reports from steep rise in prices of tomato coming from major cities like Delhi and Mumbai, traders in this region also hiked the prices. None, however, expected that cartons of tomatoes would be stolen.
The prices of tomatoes were around Rs 20 per kilogramme a few days ago. They went up to Rs 30 to Rs 40 in the second and third week of June. Suddenly the prices soared to Rs 100 and more in rural and urban areas. The same is the case with other vegetables.
On Friday theft of about 20 crates of tomatoes was reported in Gondia. The cost of the tomatoes was estimated to be Rs 30,000. The thieves also took away an electronic weighing machine worth Rs 10,000. The sufferer was Baban alias Babu Gangbhoj. He lodged a complaint with the police. Based on CCTV footage Gondia police are searching for the thief. The traders became cautious with the reported theft of tomatoes in the Gondia market.
