3,757 school buses and 2,995 vans in urban and rural areas of Nagpur have renewed fitness certificates. The remaining 762 vehicles are still running on the road without ‘fitness’. As a result, students’ lives are at risk. Commissioner of Police Amitesh Kumar instructed to conduct a joint campaign of RTO and the Police Department from Monday to take action against such vehicles.
A meeting of the School Bus Safety Committee was held on Friday under the
chairmanship of the Commissioner of Police. Regional Transport Officer Rajabhau Gite, Deputy Regional Transport Officer Ravindra Bhuyar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Chetna Tidke, along with senior officers of the police department, officers of the three RTO offices and principals of various schools were present. In this meeting, the Commissioner reviewed the safe transportation of school students.
It was decided to provide the facility of renewing the certificate of competency even on weekends and holidays for the school vans or school buses which do not get the online date and time for renewing the certificate of competency.
If students are not accommodated according to provision 106 of the Maharashtra Motor Vehicle Rules 1989, if more students are accommodated than the capacity, the police will direct action as per the provisions of the Motor Vehicle Act 1988 and the Maharashtra Motor Vehicle (Regulations for School Buses) 2011.
Instructions were also given that parents should ensure that the documents of the school bus or school vehicle in which the students are transported are valid.
