Nagpur witnessed a tragic incident when a nursing student lost her life to gastroenteritis after consuming contaminated panipuri. In response, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) took immediate action, initiating a crackdown on panipuri vendors throughout the city. Over the past few days, FDA teams conducted raids on 51 roadside and open-air panipuri vendors across various locations in Nagpur.
During the raids, thorough inspections were carried out, focusing on vendor cleanliness and the quality of food items. In 33 cases, violators were fined a total of Rs 1 lakh. Additionally, approximately 25 to 30 per cent of vendors without proper licenses were instructed to cease operations immediately. However, the FDA clarified that vendors could quickly obtain a business license by paying a nominal fee of Rs. 100 per annum, allowing them to resume operations legally.
Most of the panipuri sellers promptly applied for the necessary license and, after receiving approval, were able to restart their businesses. Alongside licensing, the FDA also provided comprehensive guidance to all food vendors on crucial aspects of maintaining a safe food environment. This included ensuring cleanliness, proper storage of raw materials, provision of clean water, and delivering quality food to customers. These measures aim to prevent similar incidents in the future and promote food safety across Nagpur.
