Inter-college sports competitions should be strengthened for developing good sports persons, said former Ranji Cricket player Hemant Wasu.
Wasu was speaking during the felicitation of prominent sports persons of RTM Nagpur University, at Guru Nanak Bhavan, on Thursday. The annual award function was chaired by RTMNU VC Dr Subhash Chaudhari. Pro-VC Dr Sanjay Dudhe, Director of Physical Education Department Dr Sharad Suryavanshi, NSS Director Dr Sopandev Pise, and Director of Students Welfare Dr Mangesh Pathak were present.
Wasu said that he used to watch inter-college matches at Subhedar Hall and the University ground. In the recent past inter-collegiate competitions have reduced. Sports clubs have become commercial depriving many talented sports persons of the opportunities to play at higher levels.
Dr Suryavanshi made introductory remarks. The sports persons from Nagpur district were felicitated on the occasion. A similar event will be held in for students of the Gondia, Wardha and Bhandara districts.
Dr Chaudhari said that talented sports persons will be felicitated by the university. He also said that the University is thinking of increasing the amount of cash prizes given to them. The University will given Rs 5,000 each to 100 sports persons during the centenary year of the University. He also informed the students about progress in laying synthetic tracks, indoor stadium and other facilities for promoting sports.
Dr Sonali Shirbhate and Dr Nitin Jangitwar conducted the proceedings.
Janhavi Kadu of Dharampeth M P Deo Science College has won cash prizes of Rs 72,000. Mahila Mahavidyalaya’s Prajakta Godbole got Rs 52,000; Rutuja Talegaonkar of Dr Ambedkar College received a cash prize of Rs 44,000; Alifia Pathan of Saraswati Mahavidyalaya, Koradi received Rs 40,000, and Shri Binzani City College student Shubhangi Raut Rs 27,000.
Sports trainers, teachers and managers were also felicitated on the occasion.
