The Kerala Legislative Assembly passed a resolution unanimously on Wednesday to change the name of the state from Kerala to Keralam.
The proposal to use the name Keralam in the Constitution and all official records was moved by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in the Assembly.
While introducing the bill, Chief Minister Vijayan said that the state was formed on the basis of the region of Malayalam. In Malayalam, Kerala is called Keralam, but in the constitution, the name of the state is Kerala.
Vijayan said that this Assembly unanimously recommends to the Central Government that the name of the state be changed and calledbe registered as Keralam under Article 3 of the Constitution. Along with this, we also demand that the name of the state be changed to Keralam in all the languages listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
