Discovery and synthesis of Quantum Dots
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced the Nobel Prize in Chemistry to American Scientists Moungi G Bawendi, Louis Brus and Alexei I Ekimov for the discovery and synthesis of quantum dots, nanoparticles that their size determine their properties.
Bawendi of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Brus of Columbia University and Ekimov of Nanocrystal Technology Inc shared the prize for research in quantum dots, which is an important part of nanotechnology toolbox. The three have been in the forefront in the world of nanotechnology.
These smallest components of nanotechnology now spread their light from televisions and LED lamps, and can also guide surgeons when they remove tumour tissue. The Nobel laureates in Chemistry have succeeded in producing particles so small that their properties are determined by quantum phenomena. The technology will be useful in the field of electronics, small sensors and slim solar cells etc.
