The petitions filed in the Supreme Court regarding local self-bodies election were heard on Wednesday. But nothing could happen in this hearing. These elections have been delayed because the Supreme Court is constantly getting date after date.
Elections to 23 Municipal Corporations, 25 Zilla Parishads and 207 Municipalities and Panchayat Samiti are pending in Maharashtra. All these local bodies have no public representatives for the last one and a half year. All the affairs are in the hands of the administration. Officer Raj can be seen in local self bodies.
The ruling party is not keen on elections. All the political parties are now preparing for the Lok Sabha, as soon as the Lok Sabha elections are over, preparations for the assembly elections will begin in Maharashtra, so the political parties are not ready for the local bodies elections. In the background of the Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha elections, every political party wants to keep its workers united and the ruling party is focusing on how local bodies elections can be avoided more and more so that there is no resentment.
Local self bodies are ruled by officers, so the voice of the people does not reach there. As all the affairs are in the hands of the administration. The arbitrariness of the officiers has increased, as a result of which the complaints of corruption have increased in many places.
The constitution was amended to decentralize power and increase people’s participation in local bodies. But as elections are being avoided year after year only for political convenience, this is an insult to the constitution and democratic values.
