Despite a state ban on nylon manja in 2021, the dangerous kite-flying thread continues to be readily available, causing injuries and even death to humans and birds. The Nagpur police informed the Bombay High Court about this ongoing issue during a hearing prompted by concerns over several recent incidents.
According to the police, the bulk of the nylon manja is smuggled into Maharashtra from neighboring states, particularly Gujarat (Surat) and Uttar Pradesh.
The Bombay High Court expressed deep concern and took the following actions:
- Censured the Maharashtra government for failing to control the sale of banned nylon manja.
- Directed the Maharashtra Chief Secretary to contact his counterparts in UP and Gujarat to address the issue of illegal production and sale of nylon manja.
- Adjourned the hearing until January 10, 2024, awaiting updates from the government and police on their efforts to curb the problem.
The news reports several tragic incidents, including the death of a 23-year-old engineer and a 45-year-old carpenter due to injuries from nylon manja. This issue highlights the need for better inter-state coordination and stricter enforcement of the ban on nylon manja to protect public safety and wildlife.
