University Grant Commission, on Wednesday, conferred the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) with Deemed University status. IIMC is the premier institute of journalism in the country and runs various courses related to journalism, advertising and public relations at its headquarters and five regional centres.
The deemed university status extends to IIMC, New Delhi and its five regional campuses located in Jammu (Jammu and Kashmir), (Maharashtra), Amravati Aizawl (Mizoram), Kottayam (Kerala), and Dhenkanal (Odisha). Grant of Deem University status now authorizes IIMC to offered degree courses.
It currently runs diploma courses. With a glorious history of imparting quality education in media subjects, the granting of university status marks a new beginning in the history of IIMC.
As more courses could be added to the cur- riculum along with research and doctorate programmes. “This step is expected to provide with new opportunities and help them explore new avenues,” tweeted Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur, thanking the PM Narendra Modi and Minister for Education D Pradhan.
