A report by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) reveals that approximately 84% of smartphone users in India habitually look at their phones within 15 minutes of waking up. Additionally, the report revealed that approximately 31% of waking hours are dedicated to smartphone usage, with individuals checking their devices an average of 80 times per day.
According to the report titled ‘Reimagining Smartphone Experience: How ‘Surfaces’ can play a key role in making the phone smarter,’ approximately 50% of people’s smartphone usage time is allocated to streaming content.
According to the report, the time spent on smartphones has increased from roughly two hours in 2010 to approximately 4.9 hours. In 2010, all of the phone usage time was devoted to socializing through texts or calls, whereas by 2023, this portion had dwindled to 20-25%. Socializing occupied the second position in smartphone usage, followed by searching, gaming, shopping, online transactions, and news, according to the report. Individuals in the 18-24 age group were discovered to allocate more time to consuming short-form videos such as Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, etc., compared to those aged 35 and above.
The report also revealed that half the time, individuals pick up their phones more out of habit than out of a genuine need for the device. Emphasizing the increasing significance of smartphones in people’s lives, the report noted that these devices have surpassed keys or wallets in importance. Additionally, in India, for a significant portion of the population, the first access to the internet was through mobile phones rather than desktops, primarily due to their affordability and the availability of inexpensive data, as stated in the report.
