The government regulation (GR) mandating the inclusion of Marathi as a compulsory subject in all schools, regardless of the medium of instruction and management, will be strictly enforced. The Education Department in the State has issued orders to deputy directors of education to ensure full compliance with these directives. Consequently, Marathi is now being taught in every school across the state, according to sources.
Additionally, amendments will be made to Section 4 of the GR to include provisions for derecognizing schools or revoking their NoCs if they fail to teach Marathi. With Marathi instruction now compulsory, all schools are required to maintain records of grading and submit reports to the divisional deputy director of education, as stated by the education department.
The implementation of the GR making Marathi compulsory began on April 1, 2020. Although temporary concessions were granted during the Covid crisis, these were only temporary, and some schools misinterpreted the relaxation, failing to take the GR seriously.
