A climate strike has been called by Partavaran Prerna Vidarbha, other non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and Nagpur residents in support of the Ladakh residents and 3 Idiot fame Dr. Sonam Wangchuk.
It will take place on March 17 from 4.40 to 7 p.m. at Samvidhan Chowk, which is close to RBI.
Dr Wangchuk’s climate strike is to press their demand to implement the Sixth Schedule, which will help preserve Ladakh’s natural heritage by giving local bodies more autonomy and the ability to enact laws pertaining to the sustainable use of the region’s resources.
It is important to note that the Himalayas, especially the Ladakh region, is very vulnerable to the effects of climate change. Any unplanned and unregulated work in the name of development, like mining or rapid industrialisation will have a catastrophic effect notonly on this region but entire India.
Therefore, Dr Wangchuk is on a21-day extendable hunger strike since the last 9 days in sub-zero temperatures, camping out with supporters demanding for the implementation of VIth Schedule which was promised in the poll manifesto to them in 2019 but has not been fulfilled yet. On appeal from Dr Wangchuk, millions of his well wishers, followers as well as environment and nature lovers have responded by planning nationwide climate strike or fasts on March 17.
This co-ordinated event will try and raise awareness about the perils of unsustainable development, mining and industrialisation, which is leading to the planet being unsuitable for its inhabitants in the long run.
