The Maharashtra government has issued a dress code for school teachers. It states that teachers will be prohibited from wearing jeans and t-shirts, as well as dark-colored clothing with designs or prints. It recommends that female instructors wear salwar or churidar with kurta and dupatta or a saree, while male teachers wear shirt and pants with the shirt tucked in.
The Government Resolution (GR) issued by the school education department, which outlines nine-point guidelines for school teachers’ dress codes, is applicable to all schools, whether public or private, and is affiliated with the board. It asks teachers to be mindful of what they wear because school-aged children are impressionable, and inappropriate clothing on teachers can have a negative impact.
Teachers and educationists, on the other hand, opposed the action and questioned its intentions. According to a Mumbai school teacher, students are already aware of the need of dressing appropriately, and it is up to them to choose what to wear based on their own and local preferences.
The state’s School Education Department wants to raise teachers’ morale by recognising them, thus instructors will now write “Tr” as a prefix before their names. The Commissionerate for School Education is in charge of creating a sign for the event, as well as ensuring proper exposure.
