Nagpur, an influential Lok Sabha constituency in Maharashtra, comprising one of its 48 parliamentary seats, represents a varied electorate spread across six Assembly segments, namely Nagpur South West, Nagpur South, Nagpur East, Nagpur West, Nagpur Central, and Nagpur North. The constituency is a general seat and is not designated for representation by Scheduled Castes (SCs) or Scheduled Tribes (STs). The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Congress, and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) emerge as the principal contenders in the constituency. Notably, Congress leader Vilas Muttemwar secured victory in the Nagpur constituency for four consecutive terms spanning from 1998 to 2009. Similarly, Banwarilal Purohit of the BJP claimed victory thrice, in 1984, 1989, and 1996, consolidating their significant presence in the electoral landscape of Nagpur.

His closest contender, Congress candidate Nana Patole, received 444,212 votes, accounting for 37.42% of the total valid votes polled, which stood at 1,186,051.
