Implementing the Heat Action Plan, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has enhanced the shelters for beggars across six locations in various parts of the city. The Social Welfare Department of the civic body is prepared to engage its resources to assist homeless individuals wandering in the city, relocating them to Shelter Homes.
The annual procedure is set to commence shortly, as the temperature steadily increases and the heat becomes noticeable to citizens.
Dr. Abhijeet Chaudhary, the Commissioner Municipal and Administrator, along with Anchal Goyal, the Additional Municipal Commissioner, recently evaluated the actions to be executed under the Heat Action Plan.
Dr. Ranjana Lade, who heads the Social Welfare Department, will oversee the implementation of the plan to rehabilitate beggars throughout the summer season.
The reason behind this initiative is to prevent the risk of heatstroke, which beggars are particularly vulnerable to, especially considering many of them often go hungry. During the summer season, the most important part is to remain hydrated, and the Shelter Homes have implemented all necessary measures to ensure their well-being.
The NMC has designated Shelter Homes to several social organizations through the National Urban Livelihood Mission, tasking them with identifying homeless individuals, particularly at bustling squares, bus stands, railway stations, and city markets. Under the Deendayal Antoday Yojana, the civic body has set aside space to accommodate up to 400 beggars, ensuring they are not marginalized from mainstream society and have the opportunity to seek happiness.
According to the NMC, citizens can also report homeless individuals to them, and their team will promptly respond by relocating them to shelters.
Dr. Lade, in a released statement, mentioned that citizens can reach out regarding homeless individuals by contacting the numbers: 8080143873, 9960183143, or 9960327532.
