This World Immunisation Week (24th-30th April) marks the 50th anniversary of the World Health Organization’s Expanded Program on Immunisation (EPI). This milestone commemorates the legacy of global immunisation efforts and serves as a reminder of the countless lives saved and communities protected through vaccination over the past five decades. In India, the Universal Immunisation Programme (UIP) has been successful in expanding immunisation coverage to more than 90% children. Although coverage in the first year is high, drop-out rates after 1st birthday increase. A significant number of children in the country remain partially vaccinated.
Vaccination plays a critical role in safeguarding children between the ages of 1-2 against multiple diseases. Vaccination averted 37 million childhood deaths in lower and middle-income countries between 2000 and 2019. The Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) recommends seven vaccinations* for children of this age group, first and second dose of varicella and hepatitis A, second dose of meningitis# and MMR, booster doses of PCV and DTP Hib IPV, and annual dose of flu.
Dr Vinod Gandhi, Director, Colours Mother & child care hospital, Nagpur says, “Most parents appreciate the protective benefits of vaccination but may overlook the importance of the full immunization schedule . With continuous education and conversations with healthcare providers, we can guarantee every child’s optimal health. This World Immunization Week, let us prioritize conversations with doctors to make informed choices for our children and their future.”
A child’s developing immunity is often unable to fight against multiple infections. Complete immunisation protects children against serious infections and their complications. The burden of hospitalisation is reduced. Immunised children can achieve their physical and cognitive milestones on time. Immunisation also helps to develop ‘herd immunity’ and prevents community outbreaks. Complete compliance with the Immunisation schedule is an effective tool to create a blanket of safety[vi].
This World Immunisation Week, parents are encouraged to speak to their doctor to know more about the complete immunisation schedule recommended by the IAP to provide their children with the best shield against vaccine-preventable diseases. By vaccinating children on time, parents contribute to the collective effort to eradicate vaccine-preventable diseases and create a healthier future for all.
