Mumbai’s bustling international airport is preparing for pre-monsoon upkeep, leading to the temporary closure of its two runways for six hours on May 9. This closure, scheduled from 11 am to 5 pm, is deemed essential to ensure the safety and efficiency of operations, as stated by Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL). As part of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport’s (CSMIA) proactive measures ahead of the monsoon season, both the primary runway 09/27 and the secondary runway 14/32 will undergo temporary closure from 11 am to 5 pm on May 9 to facilitate necessary maintenance and repairs, according to MIAL’s announcement.
A PTI report states that airlines and stakeholders received a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) in December, advising them to adjust flight schedules for the upcoming maintenance. The announcement assures minimal disruption, ensuring maintenance won’t impact flight schedules or inconvenience passengers.
Mumbai Airport spans 1,033 acres and boasts extensive infrastructure, comprising runways, taxiways, and aprons. Its annual maintenance regimen includes meticulous inspection of runway surfaces to address daily wear and tear, bolstering the airport’s airside areas’ integrity and durability. Managing approximately 950 daily flight movements, airport authorities prioritize ensuring smooth operations. The primary runway 09/27 measures 3,448 meters long and 60 meters wide, while the secondary runway 14/32 spans 2,871 meters long and 45 meters wide, accommodating the diverse range of aircraft serving Mumbai.
