Prime Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party leader Narendra Modi tendered his resignation on Wednesday to President Droupdi Murmu. The President accepted the resignation and directed him to remain in the position till the formation of the new government.
Earlier Modi convened a cabinet meeting at his official residence and decided to dissolve the 17th Parliament.
According to the procedure, the President would announce the results of the elections and start the procedure to form the new government, within two days. With the BJP and alliance getting a majority Modi is expected to take oath as Prime Minister for the third consecutive term very soon. The term of the present Parliament is expiring on June 16. BJP has won 240 seats and emerged as the largest elected party. The number is 32 short of the simple majority. However, with its alliance the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has the majority and can claim to form the government.
NDA leaders will discuss the issue at Modi’s official residence on Wednesday and take decision on the issue.
