Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, has directed Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) officials to implement preventive and corrective measures to prevent waterlogging in the city during the monsoon season. He also instructed them to expedite the cleaning of the Nag River.
Gadkari on Tuesday conducted a review of several ongoing development projects in the city at a meeting held at Ravi Bhavan. He expressed dissatisfaction with the Nagpur Municipal Corporation for failing to complete the cleaning of the Nag River within the specified deadline. He directed them to complete the work to prevent citizens from facing waterlogging issues in the city.
During the first rain on Monday, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) was exposed as water accumulated in numerous residential areas. This reminded citizens of the devastating September 2023 flood that affected many parts of the city.
In response to the citizens’ plea, the Nagpur Bench of the Bombay High Court directed the state government, NMC, and the irrigation department to take corrective measures in the vicinity of the Ambazari dam. The administration has initiated strengthening work on the Ambazari dam and is also reconstructing the Nag River bridge at Ambazari tail.
Meanwhile, Union Minister Gadkari conducted a review of the Nag River development work. He instructed officials to expedite the completion of the project. During the meeting, officials were informed that many development works were affected due to the Lok Sabha election code of conduct. The construction of cement roads is not yet completed.
