President Dropuadi Murmu has accepted the resignation of Banwarilal Purohit, Governor of Punjab and Administrator of the Union territory of Chandigarh. Purohit had tendered his resignation a few months back, but was requested to continue on the same position. He had resigned in personal grounds, probably related to his health. Assam Governor Gulab Chand Kataria has been appointed as Punjab’s governor in place of Purohit.
A former MP from Nagpur, and former Maharashtra Minister, Purohit was Managing Editor of the leading English daily of Central India The Hitavada, before being appointed Governor. He held the post of Governor for Meghalaya Assam, Tamil Nadu and Punjab.
Born in Mawalgarh on April 16, 1940, he came to Nagpur at a tender age with his father Bhagwandas Purohit, who was a businessman.
Banwarilal Purohit was a former student of G S College of Commerce, Nagpur, and entered politics as a Congressman. He later joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. A down-to-earth politician who held several important positions is known for his dedicated work and honesty. He acquired The Hitavada started by Gopal Krishna Gokhale in 1911, from Vidyacharan Shukla and others, and ran it successfully.
