Several changes in the prisons in Maharashtra will be carried out. The changes are being made considering reforms and rehabilitation of the prisoners.
The changes have been suggested under the new Model Prisons Act 2023 passed by the Government of India. The Maharashtra Government decided to carry out the changes and issue a notification to that effect. The decision was taken in a cabinet meeting on Wednesday.
The state government is permitted to make certain changes, if required, as per local conditions.
Special prisons, open prisons for women, temporary jails, open colonies for prisoners, and institutions for young prisoners are some of the key issues in the Act. A Grievance Cell for the prisoners will also be established. Building welfare funds for the employees, computerization of the entire process, connecting data base of prisoners, and using modern technology related to security are some of the measures to be introduced.
