Oral Hygiene Day was observed at Government Dental College (GDC) on August 1, celebrating the birth anniversary of Dr. GB Shankalkar, India’s pioneering periodontist and a key figure in establishing the Government Dental Colleges in Nagpur and Mumbai. Dr. Shankalkar, also a founding member of the Indian Society of Periodontology, is remembered for his significant contributions to the field of dentistry.
In line with the Indian Society of Periodontology’s mission, the event at Government Dental College aimed to promote comprehensive oral health. The goal was to enhance the quality of oral health so that individuals can eat, speak, and engage in daily activities without experiencing pain, discomfort, or embarrassment.
Dr. Abhay Datarkar, Dean of GDC, said that nearly 85-90% of adults face oral health issues, positioning India as a major center for oral cancer. The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that more than 95% of adults in India have dental caries, and over 50% suffer from periodontal disease.
To mark Oral Hygiene Day, Dr. Mangesh Fadnaik, Head of Department, announced a poster competition for doctors at local institutions and schools. A free dental check-up and treatment camp was also organized to provide essential dental services to the community.
Dr. Vaibhav Karemore, Public Relations Officer, highlighted key practices for maintaining good oral health. He emphasized the importance of brushing teeth twice daily with a quality toothbrush and toothpaste, flossing regularly, and visiting a dentist for routine check-ups and cleanings. It is also crucial to inform the dentist about any health conditions or medications, maintain a balanced diet, and quit smoking, as smoking significantly increases the risk of gum disease.
