The Nagpur Bench High Court has itself filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) regarding illegal constructions in the city. The petition was heard before a bench of Justice Nitin Sambre and Justice Abhay Mantri. As per the court order, a joint monitoring committee of the three development agencies has been set up to take action against illegal constructions. An affidavit was submitted to the court on Monday on behalf of this committee.
The committee has classified the illegal constructions in the city into five categories. A list of illegal constructions to be dealt with on a preliminary basis under category ‘A’ was presented. According to this, 1 thousand 175 illegal constructions have been identified in the category ‘A’ of the Municipal Corporation. Of these, 648 structures have been demolished till the end of July and 527 are remaining. On the other hand, 1951 constructions have been marked in ‘A’ category under Nagpur Improvement Scheme. Action is still pending on 1233 of these illegal constructions. 1960 illegal constructions under NMRD within the city limits have been placed in ‘A’ category. Action is pending on 839 of these constructions. Remarkably, the three development agencies hammered out only 16 illegal constructions in the month of July. The next hearing on the petition will be held on August 28.
